Natural history
Brosimum alicastrum, known as ojoche in Costa Rica and ramón elsewhere in Mesoamerica, is a tree native to tropical America in the family Moraceae. It has simple, alternate leaves with secondary veins that show clearly against the light.
References describe adults reaching 20 to 40 metres and fruit with seeds used as food. These are characteristics of the adult species, not measurements or evidence of reproduction in this photographed juvenile. No flowers or fruit are documented in the images.
This breadnut already supports a visible community on its branches. Rosettes of narrow leaves and hanging stems differ in form from the tree’s own leaves. Separating these silhouettes is part of observing it: not everything green in its crown belongs to the breadnut.
