Natural history
Malay apple, Syzygium malaccense, belongs to Myrtaceae. A species of Asian origin, it is cultivated in Costa Rica for its fruit. Its leaves are simple, opposite and entire; successive pairs face different directions around the twig.
The species produces flowers with numerous reddish stamens and fleshy fruit with white pulp. Those organs are absent from this record: the photographs document foliage, bark and plants growing on the trunk.
In this individual, an elongated, compact crown encloses much of the stem. At close range, its dark surface reveals mosses, pale patches and small accompanying plants. This particular crown describes one tree, not an identical model for every member of its species.
